5 Tips for Managing Chronic Pain

Don’t Stress

Reduce stress in your life. Stress intensifies chronic pain. Negative feelings like depression, anxiety and anger can increase the body’s sensitivity to pain. By learning to take control of stress, you may find some relief from chronic pain.

Deep breathing and meditation are techniques that help your body relax, which may ease pain. Find a quiet location, a comfortable position, and block out distracting thoughts. Then, imagine a spot just below your navel. Breathe into that spot, filling your abdomen with air. Let the air fill you from the abdomen up, then let it out, like deflating a balloon.

Stay Active

Our bodies are designed to move. The best exercise is the one you actually like doing and one you that will continue to do. Try to find something you enjoy and can make part of a routine, because the most important exercise for your recovery is one that is performed consistently.

Some people prefer daily workouts on an elliptical machine while others enjoy swimming. If these types of exercise are too strenuous for you, taking a walk every day can prove  to be extremely beneficial.

Don’t Ignore Pain

The “no pain, no gain” theory doesn’t mean you should be pushing yourself to the limit. For muscle-building exercise regiments, muscles have to be stressed, broken down, and rebuilt to become stronger. When dealing with a spinal issue, however, be careful not to push yourself too much and risk further damage to the injured area.

The role of pain management is often to take away the severe pain to enable the patient to proceed with rehabilitation. The rehabilitation can be slow, but basic precautions and a consistent routine will foster the best possible recovery.

Drink Less, Sleep More

Pain makes sleep difficult, but alcohol can make sleep problems worse. If you’re living with chronic pain, consuming less alcohol can improve your quality of life. Research shows that heavy drinkers are more likely to suffer frequent fractures due to brittle bones and nerve damage.

Get Support

When you’re with people who understand what you’re going through, you feel less alone. You also benefit from their wisdom in managing chronic pain. In addition to a support group, consider meeting with a mental health professional.

Pain affects the whole person – mind, body and spirit – and counseling can help you learn to cope better and avoid negative thoughts that make pain worse. Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
