When you visit our office for the first time, here’s what you can expect:
What to Expect
We start by getting your medical background through new patient paperwork. Prepare to share information regarding previous surgeries, allergies, family history and current medications. You’ll also fill out paperwork regarding the nature of your current issue, including such details as when the pain first started and what the cause may be.
Once your background information has been gathered, you’ll receive a comprehensive physical exam. Pain management specialists do not want to cause more harm, which is why they’re especially careful during the initial exam. The specialist will listen to the heart and lungs and assess your general physical condition. If you have records and imaging results from a previous doctor, be sure to have them faxed over ahead of time or bring them with you. The specialist can then review these records and get a better idea of your condition.
The rest of the appointment will be spent discussing the pain you’re having, when it’s worst, what brings it on and how it interferes with your day-to-day life. Since pain management doctors are highly specialized in treating chronic pain, you can rest assured that you will make headway in your first appointment.
You will be given a treatment plan that outlines your diagnoses and treatment, which can then be discussed with your primary care physician. On return visits, additional treatment will be provided and your progress will be evaluated.
